Protect your brand
Your name and logo are often the most valuable things about your company – they create recognition and protect you from imitators and free riders. For digitally scaled offerings in particular, trademark protection is business-critical. In Switzerland you register a trademark with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IGE).
Why trademark protection matters
A registered trademark secures the signs under which you appear on the market: name, logo and often your slogan. It is the basis for recognition, protects against confusion with imitators and is a prerequisite for premium positioning and possible licensing models. Important: consistent spelling and a consistent logo strengthen distinctiveness – inconsistent variants weaken it.
Register a trademark in Switzerland
You register the word mark (and, if needed, the combined word/figurative mark) with the IGE for your relevant classes of goods and services. It only applies in Switzerland. Before registering, an identity and similarity search is worthwhile so you do not infringe older rights. In parallel, secure the matching domains and social media handles with consistent spelling.
Expanding to Germany and Austria
A Swiss trademark does NOT automatically protect you in the EU. For Germany, you can use an EU trademark (which also covers Austria) or a national German trademark; you add Austria if needed. Germany in particular has a strong culture of legal enforcement – plan a thorough trademark search and registration early, as soon as you see traction there.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Swiss trademark also protect me in Germany?
No. Registration with the IGE only applies in Switzerland. For Germany and Austria you need an EU trademark or national registrations – a Swiss trademark gives no automatic EU protection.
Is registering a trademark worth it at the start?
Yes, a one-off trademark basis in Switzerland usually makes sense and requires manageable effort. Delayed trademark protection makes it easier for imitators and can block later expansion.
