Find a company name

Your company name is the first thing customers notice about you – and you cannot choose it freely in legal terms. The most expensive mistake: falling in love with a name, printing letterhead, and only then finding out it is taken or not permitted. Here is how to do it right.

What makes a strong name

Memorable, easy to pronounce, unmistakable and suitable internationally. Check this before anything else: is the matching .ch domain (ideally also the social media handles) still available? A perfect name without a domain is of little use today.

Legal requirements in Switzerland

The name must not be misleading and must be sufficiently distinct from existing entries. For a GmbH (limited liability company) or AG (company limited by shares), the legal form must appear in the name (“GmbH”, “AG”); for a sole proprietorship (Einzelfirma), the owner's surname.

Check availability in three registers

Check your preferred name in the central business name index Zefix, in the trademark register of the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IGE) and as a domain before you commit. These 15 minutes save you costly renaming and legal disputes. planix supports you from choosing a name to the entry in the commercial register (Handelsregister) – free of charge.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose any company name?

No. The name must not be misleading, must be distinct from existing companies and, depending on the legal form, must contain certain elements (e.g. “GmbH” or “AG”).

How do I check whether a company name is available?

Via the central business name index Zefix, the trademark register (IGE) and a domain search. Only commit once all three are clear.
