How to write an executive summary
The executive summary is the most important chapter of your business plan – often the only one that is read in full. In a few paragraphs, it decides whether your plan convinces.
What to include
The summary covers the essentials: problem and solution, target audience and market, your offer and unique selling point, the team, and the key figures and capital requirements. All on one to two pages.
Write it last, read it first
Although it comes first, it’s best to write the executive summary last – once all the chapters are in place. That way it really sums up the best of your plan.
Concrete and confident
Avoid empty phrases and generalities. Give concrete figures, clear statements and the benefit for the reader. If you convince here, you win attention for the rest of the plan.
Frequently asked questions
How long is an executive summary?
Usually one to two pages. It must be understandable on its own, without the rest of the plan having been read.
When do I write the executive summary?
Ideally last, when all the other chapters are finished. That way it contains the strongest points of your entire plan.
